On Two Collision Protocols for High Speed Bus LANs

چکیده
It is commonly believed that collision protocols are impractical for very fast bus networks, owing to the constraints on the minimum packet length. In this paper, we present two collision protocols that contradict this opinion. These protocols are two representatives of the so-called Piggyback Ethernet family. They incur no synchronisa-tion overhead under very light load, and under heavy traac conditions they perform no worse than collision-free protocols. Piggyback Eth-ernets are implementable on the basis of a simple, unsegmented, bidi-rectional, broadcast-type medium. Thus, they can be viewed as reene-ments of commercial Ethernet aimed at providing high-performance service in the environments when the packet length is small in comparison to the propagation length of the bus.

Performance Analysis for a New Medium Access Control Protocol in Wireless LANs
One fundamental issue in high-speed wireless local area networks (LANs) is to develop efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols. In this paper, we focus on the performance improvement in both MAC layer and transport layer by using a novel medium access control protocol for high-speed wireless LANs deploying carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). We first present a re...
متن کاملSpecification of Collision-Free CSMA MAC Protocols for Wireless LANs
Collision-free Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols based on Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) are interesting solutions in considering real-time traffic in a wireless context. The goal of this paper is to precisely make an exhaustive presentation (which we think to be understandable and pedagogical) of the main collisionfree CSMA MAC protocols for single-hop Wireless Local Area Networks (W...
متن کاملA Novel MAC Protocol with Fast Collision Resolution for Wireless LANs
Design of efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols with both high throughput performance and highdegree of fairness performance is a major focus in distributed contention-based MAC protocol research. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient contention-based MAC protocol for wireless local area networks, namely, the Fast Collision Resolution (FCR) algorithm. This algorithm is devel...
متن کامل5. Conclusion Wavelength Division Multiple Access on a High-speed Optical Fibre
Actual MAC protocols show a lack of performances when dealing with high bit rate networks. On the other hand, WDM multichannel systems will allow for a better use of the huge bandwidth of fiber optic media. In this paper, we introduce a new CSMA/CD protocol for mul-tichannel optical LANs, based on the Ethernet standard. The key issues of this protocol are the network load and the wavelength swa...
متن کاملMarch 1996 LIDS - P - 2321 Full Utilization , Fairness and Bounded Access Delay on High Speed
Many existing protocols indicate that full utilization and fairness might be incompatible in high-speed-high-latency MANs or LANs. The purpose of this paper is to study the fundamental limitations of dual bus networks, in terms of full utilization, fairness and bounded access delay. A new protocol called FUFA (fully utilized and fair) is used to demonstrate some of these basic properties. We de...
